I am an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley in the EECS department (starting 01/2010). My research in Human-Computer Interaction investigates authoring tools for professional designers and end-user programmers. I am affiliated with the Berkeley Institute of Design and the Berkeley Center for New Media. I received my PhD from the Stanford Computer Science department in 2009. I received an MSE in Computer and Information Science as well as Undergraduate Degrees in Digital Media Design and Communication from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002.
My current talk info, travel schedule, and curriculum vitae are at your disposal.

Thinking about applying for a PhD in HCI at Berkeley?
Berkeley is a fantastic place to do HCI research, and I encourage you to apply. We are actively recruiting HCI students for Fall 2010. My department, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, will be a good fit for students with a strong technical background. If your strength lies outside of computer science, apply to the home department that best matches your skill set, e.g., the iSchool. HCI at Berkeley has its home in the Berkeley Institute of Design (BiD), a 4000 sq ft lab that fosters a deeply interdisciplinary approach to design for the 21st century. The BiD lab is home to students from human-computer interaction, mechanical engineering, education, architecture and art practice. For more information about current research in HCI and the BiD lab, see the EECS Research Area Overview page and the BiD site.
Online applications were due December 16, 2009. Computer Science graduate admissions are handled at a department-wide level. I cannot help with the admissions process to any graduate or undergraduate programs, and will not respond to any email in that vein. For more information about how to apply, visit the EECS Graduate Admissions page.

Miscellanea
For historical purposes, my faculty application materials are still available. You may want to take a look at my papers&essays. I also
build physical computing tools and
projects from time to time. In a prior life I produced music and co-managed
the record label Tuning Spork Records. By now, my artist bio is somewhat out of date. Some of my tracks and mixes are
archived on the music page. I also
dabble(d) in graphic design - past projects, mostly for record sleeve
designs, are on the visuals page. I also edited Ambidextrous magazine,
Stanford's journal of design. A few times a year I update my sparse blog and a reading list of books (since
2003). You may also want to take a look at my
pictures on Flickr, bytesandpieces,
a tumblelog, and protolab, a
wiki of physical computing resources and tutorials I maintain.
